    Default Smoking around children

Texting while driving is understandably now illegal in most states. We can make laws like this, but why can we not look at laws to punish those who smoke around children? To me that is almost child endangerment due to the health risks, and the poor children do not get a choice in being around it or not.

Yes I understand what you want to say
But in fact, there's still any punishment for that.
We just gave advice but punishment.
Vietnamese government has just given a new law for people smoking: We just can smoke at home or in toilet.
If any body smokes in public, he will be keep by cabs and receive an amount of money for that.
I think that's good for your health and environment.
I hope it will be success in reducing smoke
    Cheers

I think that Smoking is great sport around children. Smokers who smoke in the presence of young children, who are still developing, are causing them irreversable physical and psychological harm, and should be treated the same as child abusers and child molesters.

its great that the vietnam gov't has impose that law to smoke only inside your house. i think to avoid smokers and to force them to quit is to increase the price of cigarettes so less people will be able to afford it. i know that singapore has an expensive price for cigarettes. also, anyone should have the right to report to a police officer if someone is smoking near a child or if there is no law yet, then it is our responsibility as a concerned citizen to tell the smoker to move away where there is no child nearby.

You say very true. Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health not only harmful but also very harmful to those around them. So, let us say no to smoking.

There are two main reasons for not smoking around your children:
    • to avoid damaging their health through passive smoking, and
    • to reduce the chances of encouraging them to take up the habit themselves.
    The dangers of passive smoking

Passive smoking, also know as second-hand smoke, is when people other than the smoker breathe in the smoke from cigarettes, cigars and pipes. A smoker inhales only 15% of the smoke from a cigarette - the rest goes into the surrounding air and other people breathe it in. Second-hand smoke contains over 4,000 toxic chemicals and 69 of these cancer-causing chemicals. People who passively breathe in smoke are therefore at the same risk of disease and infection as actual smokers.
Babies and young children who are exposed to passive smoking at home are more prone to chest, ear, nose and throat infections. This can then develop into more serious conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
In the UK, 17,000 children under the age of five are admitted to hospital every year with illnesses relating to passive smoking.
A study by Imperial College London, published in the British Medical Journal, shows that if parents expose their children to second-hand smoke, their children are three times more likely to get lung cancer later in life. This is because breathing in the smoke of their parents' cigarettes damages the child's lungs.
Children of smokers are also more likely to develop mouth or throat cancer, or respiratory diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). This is even if the children don't smoke themselves.
It is important to remember that passive smoking not only has serious medical implications for your children's health, but it can also potentially kill them. Exposure to smoke is dangerous because children are vulnerable to infections, but also they may develop chronic conditions like asthma, which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is estimated that every year there are 1,600 - 5,400 new cases of asthma as a consequence of parental smoking. It is your responsibility to protect their health and also set a good example.
Also smoking is a major risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) commonly known as cot death. If you are a mother and you smoke, your infant is three times more likely to die from cot death compared to infants with mothers who do not smoke.
    Discouraging children from smoking

Statistics from Cancer Research UK show that 450 children take up smoking in the UK every day. If you are a smoker, and a parent, it will be hard to justify yourself when telling your children not to copy you in becoming a smoker themselves.
Children look to their parents and siblings as role models. The ideal solution is for you to lead by example and quit. Explain your reasons and get your children to support you. Try telling your children about the damage smoking does to your health, such as coughing, and yellow skin and nails, and describe how expensive the habit will cost them. Don't share, or buy cigarettes for your children.
Most smokers take up the habit when they are teenagers so if you can encourage your children not to smoke when they are young it is unlikely that they will then take up the habit in later years.
For advice and help on how to quit smoking call the free NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 022 4 332 (7am - 11pm daily).
If you are finding it hard to quit, or you do not want to quit, you should only smoke when you are outside your house as this will reduce the health risks to your children.
